Botswana National U-19 boys’ Cricket team has qualified to compete at the ICC - Africa Division 1 category. The promotion comes after the team finished second at the just-ended ICC – Africa Division 2 Cricket World Cup qualifiers which were held in South Africa. Botswana accumulated eight (8) points behind Ghana with 12 points.
Behind Botswana were the initial favourites Nigeria and Sierra Leone with 8 points each. The local boys outclassed the two teams with a better Net Run Rate following an impressive performance at the tournament. Botswana has recorded a +1.298 net run rate while Nigeria and Sierra Leone got +1.175 and +1.025 respectively.
Botswana’s qualification means the team will now fight for the direct qualification for the 2018 ICC World Cup. The Division 1 category has four countries - Kenya, Uganda, Ghana and Botswana. The teams are expected to battle it out sometime next year where the winner of the group will qualify for the World Cup.
