The Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) held a sponsors appreciation night at Gaborone Golf Club on Thursday. This was in recognition of the P37 million that companies pumped into sport organisations in 2015/16 adding to the P70 million that the BNSC got from government. The BNSC chairperson Solly Reikeletseng said the sponsors’ night is the only event that they have dedicated to those that have facilitated them with resources in delivering their mandate. He said that the sponsors’ night dates back 10 years and they view it as a network with those who have made a collective effort to drive ideals of sport in the country. Reikeletseng said the resources injected into sport have been very instrumental and made Botswana competitive in the global world of sports. “Some of the things may not be too obvious in regard to the contributions you made in sport, but know that it has made tremendous change,” he said. Reikeletseng said that they have stars because they have been exposed to many games and competitions that identified talent all through the sponsorship of programs like the Re ba Bona Ha grassroots development programme that Debswana pumps millions in. He said that human resources, financial investments and infrastructure are vital and as such urged sponsors to continue putting money in sports since they need additional resources to succeed as the BNSC. “The pursuit of sport excellence is not only on athletes but of hosting major local and international sport events,” he said, adding that he hopes in the next five years they will get more from their sponsors. Sports sponsors include Debswana, Orange, Mascom, Sprint Couriers, Bank ABC, Debswana, BTC, Executive Catering, The Embassy of Japan, Gaborone Golf Club and many others.
