The City of Gaborone will on 16 September host the inaugural Gaborone City Mayor’s Marathon. The marathon is Mayor Kagiso Thutlwe’s initiative and is powered by Choppies Group as the Gold sponsors, with sponsorship amounting to P500 000. Speaking on Monday morning Thutlwe said the GC Mayor’s Marathon will be an annual event aimed at boosting the city’s socio-economic status. Thutlwe said since the financial crisis has slowed down development they are now coming up with initiatives to ensure the quality of life of people is restored to safeguard the children’s future. “We have come up with an initiative to host an annual marathon with a view to energize the city in areas of health and wellness, tourism boost economic growth and unity of the people,” said Thutlwe. He went on to say sport has the capabilities of helping to achieve all the things they set to attain with this marathon. He further thanked Choppies for their continued good gesture of helping to change the lives of Batswana. The mayor said they are aiming to have about 10,000 people taking part in the marathon. He revealed that he has invited mayors from the region and international athletes to be part of the initiative. The mayor said already his counterparts in Zambia and South Africa have already confirmed that they will be sending teams to the marathon. Other mayors from Namibia, Zimbabwe and the rest of SADC are said to have also shown interest in the marathon. Thutlwe called on the business community to come on board and support the initiative. He said the proceeds from the marathon will be used to developed the City of Gaborone and improve the lives of the people. Choppies CEO Ramachandran Ottapathu concurred with the mayor, saying this is the chance to improve the socio-economic development in the city as well as help in poverty eradication. Ottapathu said the marathon will help bring the people together to successfully work towards the improvement of the city. “It is possible for the City of Gaborone to be the fastest growing city in the world if we all come together. This is something attainable if we work together,” he said. The GC Mayo’s Marathon will be divided into the 42.2 km, 10km and 5km races with the biggest winner going away with P 50 000. Registration fees for the races are P300, P200 and P100 respectively. Registration forms are available in all Choppies shops and Liquoramas.
