Gaborone United (GU) might soon lose their coach Rudolf Zapata if new reports coming in are anything to go by. Reports are that Zimbabwe’s Highlanders are courting the Argentine. Media reports from the country suggest that negotiations are already at an advanced stage between the two parties. This comes as Highlanders’ current coach’s contract comes to an end in three months’ time and has already indicated he will not be extending it. This comes a week after news linking former zebras coach Peter Butler with a move to Gaborone United. Though GU management claimed ignorance of this, sources said Butler is indeed linked with GU to take up the position of a Technical Director. It is not the first time that Butler, who has always enjoyed a good relationship with GU’s main investor Nicholas Zakhem, has been linked with the team. Now that the Briton is unemployed, it is believed it is the right moment for GU to hire him. Those close to the club believe that giving Butler a TD position is a move to hold onto him should Zapata leave. They said history is set to repeat itself as the same thing happened during Ragman Gumbo’s era. “In the past Drago was brought in as a technical director while Gumbo was coach but before long he had replaced him. Reports that Highlanders are courting Zapata give the Butler-GU links more sense and the management might be trying to be in the safe side,” said a source. GU management however claimed ignorance that Zapata might be wanted by Highlanders. Zapata has been reported on a number of occasions to be wanting out of the team in the past. It was announced last season that he will leaving at the end of the season but only to make a U-turn on his decision and stayed at the club. It remains to be season as the league start this weekend how this will unfold.
