The 2019 Gaborone International Meet (GIM) promises to be bigger and better. Founded by Sportsview Runners club which is led by former athlete Glody Dube, the event has grown incredibly well since being transformed into GIM.
The Deputy PS in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development Mogomotsi Kaboeamodimo has commended the organisers for having shown commitment towards the growth of the event. He was speaking at the launch of the 2019 Local Organising Committee (LOC) which is led by Debswana’s Corporate Affairs Manager, Naledi Dikgomo-Goulden.
He said that is clear mission that they mean business. He said as the government they continue to support events like these which assist local athletes.
“It is such initiatives that add to the success stories that our athletes continue to show around the world. I am happy that Botswana Athletics Association President Thari Mooketsi supports this event and that can help well and will continue to raise stars that worry their counterparts whenever they get on track,” he said.
Kaboeamodimo commended them for starting the preparations early and urged them to make sure that they protect their brand and not squander sponsorship money. He recommended local sporting structures for continuing to host international events. He said it is quite a feat that they attract athletes that want to qualify for other international events.
“The meet will also include a space for Special Olympics and coaches should work hard in identifying talent that can be turned into gold,” he emphasized. He said they support the work of the organisers towards making sure that the event is put on the IAAF list of international meets.
Glody Dube thanked all those that continue to serve them as they take the event forward. Being a former athlete, he said he appreciates very much the local athletes and believes they should be respected. The event is scheduled for the 27th of April in 2019.
