The 2018\19 Mascom Top 8 season, which promises more upsets, is scheduled to kick start on November 23 with the defending Champions Township Rollers looking to retain their crown. Debutants Sharps Shooting Stars and Black Forest will be going all out to cause upsets. Patriot Sport’s BAKANG TIRO reviews how this season’s edition will unfold.
Soccer heavyweights Township Rollers, BDF X1, Gaborone United, Orapa United, and Jwaneng Galaxy will each be hoping to add another Mascom Top 8 title to their name. But they will not have it easy as Miscellaneous, Black Forest and Sharps are equally seeking their first taste of glory as far as this cup is concerned.
Rollers will clash with their hoodoo side Black Forest in the journey to defend the title they won last season. Popa, as they are dubbed, will expect to turn its good run in the league into the Top 8.
Orapa United the current second placed in BTC premier league will battle it out with another former winner in BDF XI. Orapa United are currently led by Mogomotsi Mpote – former Rollers coach. The Ostriches, as Orapa United are called, are lying on second position and the resurgent, with BDF XI placed fourth.
Debutants Sharps Shooting Stars will battle it out against Jwaneng Galaxy. Sharps have started this season in a mean form bringing down the mighty, which has seen then occupying the third position on the BTC Premier League log table.
However, Galaxy the former champions, know fully well what is at stake and their newly appointed mentor Miguel Da Costa does not need any more encouragement to unleash terror on Sharps.
Gaborone United take on Miscellaneous in a game that can go either way; since they occupy 10 and 11th position respectively in the log table. GU have recently recruited Phillimon Makhwengwe to take over the coaching reigns and expectations are that he will steer them into contention of all cups at hand.
Football analyst Bapati Mmotlenyane predicted that the Top 8 will be full of surprise packages, saying the league form is nothing to go by when playing a cup game.
Mmotlenyane singled out the Galaxy and Sharps fixture as a mouthwatering encounter. “Both teams have done well so far and it will be a balanced encounter that can go either way but experience wise in the competition Galaxy have upper hand,” he said.
He said the Rollers and Forest game will not be an easy one for Rollers despite their current position and form in the league competition. On paper though he finds Rollers as the better side to emerge victorious due to the experience and quality that the team boost of.
