The Letshego 5-A-Side Football Team returns home after flying Botswana’s flag high as they represented the nation in the Football 5-A-Side World Cup (F5WC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The F5WC is a global initiative that aims to select talented, amateur football players through regional 5-A-Side matches who then compete at the world finals. The team returned home to great applause and pride, having shown great determination and commitment in every match.

Letshego Botswana’s Chief Executive Officer, Fergus Ferguson said, “We celebrate our boys as we welcome them home. It was a tough tournament, and they have made us proud. They return home champions in our hearts and minds, for their teamwork, perseverance and unwavering commitment to the game. They have truly made Letshego and Batswana proud.”

The Football 5-A-Side World Cup attracted 32 countries from around the world to the prestigious soccer tournament. Almost half a million players competed worldwide over a 10-month period leading up to the world finals which the Letshego Team competed in. Kicking off with a strong start in defeating Ecuador 1-3 in their first match, our players were then up against Uruguay and South Africa, who proved to be stronger on the day. The Letshego team fought a brave battle and finished third in their Group G.

Letshego 5-A-Side Team Captain, Mmoloki Njamela, thanked Batswana who showed tremendous support, sharing well wishes across social media. “Going into the world finals, we knew it wouldn’t be an easy win. We knew we were up against the very best and were playing in a tough group. No matter what, we went out there and did our best. This experience has taught us so much and we are returning home with a handful of skills, techniques and experience which will help us to improve and evolve so that next time, we bring the cup home. Thank you for the support, BW!” he said.

The 5-A-Side team will leave for  the United Kingdom on November 29,  to watch Liverpool football greats play on their home turf in Anfield. While in Anfield, the team will also gain from international football coaching by Liverpool’s very own coaches, as well as enjoy a grand tour of the stadium and personally meet the Liverpool players.
