But Mascom says it is ready to disburse funds; blaming delay on verification process
Barely two months after the successful hosting of the Mascom Volleyball League awards players who won various awards are yet to receive the prize money which was promised.
The awards were staged in November with various players praised and rewarded for their splendid performances throughout the season. Each award carried an amount of P1000.00 which Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) together with Mascom Wireless have not yet availed to the winners. As it stands, awards which were directed to players were six which means the whole amount for both men and women’s division awards is a mere P12000.00.
A player, who wanted to be anonymous because of fear of victimization, confirmed that they are owed the prize money.
“It is true that we are yet to be paid the money from the awards. They once told us that they are fixing the money and it will be ready but still nako kgolo ke eno. I don’t even know what’s stalling the process to pay the funds,” said the player.
Another source further informed to this reporter about the predicament in relation to their dues.
“I’m still stuck here because I expected the money to be paid very soon but it’s unfortunate that up to this time nothing has happened. Personally for me I haven’t even received any communication from the federation in relation to why the payments are late. So I will wait patiently because I really need the money,” said the source.
BVF mouthpiece Kagiso Meswele confirmed that indeed the prize winners are yet to receive their dues.
“We are aware of that as the executive committee. Remember that we are coming back from holidays and a lot of signatories came back to work late. We believe that is what has caused the delay for Mascom to process the payments. It took rather long but you know we can’t skip company processes. Our treasurer has been in touch with them and I believe soon it shall be done and everyone will be paid,” he said.
When asked if they have engaged the prize winners to inform them of the late payments Meswele said: “The engagements have been as and when they call to check on how far payments were. Other than that the treasurer has contacted some to let them know of the situation”.
This publication sent an inquiry to Mascom Wireless on Wednesday where Chief Communications and Public Relations Officer Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego promised to follow up on the matter and revert back.
On Friday Lebotse-Sebego said funds for awards were ready for collection. “Mascom Volleyball League Sponsorship comprises the following – paying directly to the federation, teams and individual winners; and administration fees, which have been duly paid to the federation. For individual awards the funds are ready for collection as we speak. The verification process of the banking names for the individual prize winners was delayed to ensure that we avoid mistakes that normally occur,” said Lebotse-Sebego.
