Getbucks Botswana this week unveiled a P300 000 sponsorship for Premier League side, Notwane FC. The sponsorship will cover the reminder of the 2018/19 season and the coming 2019/20 season. This comes at a time when local premier league sides are struggling with finances, finding it difficult to meet their upkeep costs including paying players’ salaries and transport costs.
Getbucks Botswana Managing Director, Martin de Kock, said they were aware of the challenges faced by local teams and hence they chose to partner with Notwane to help them to get back to glory days.
“Today it is all about partnerships and relationships. In the past we have partnered with schools but today we are here to celebrate a new union with Notwane family. We have pledged what we have and now we are officially partners of Notwane so I urge all the players to do their best and the rest will follow because we value potential. After all hard work always beat talent and this is the beginning of a new journey,” said de Kock.
Assistant Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development Dikgang Makgalemele applauded the company’s noble gesture and urged Notwane to help Getbucks get the mileage they deserve.
“This club was winning every trophy back in the days as resources were available. Today Getbucks is helping the team to return back to the glory days. I will like to ask Notwane supporters to also help Getbucks benefit from their investment. There is a need for the club to revisit youth development structures such that there is production of quality of players who will in future help in making this team a powerhouse and competitive again,” said Makgalemele, who is also a former Notwane player.
Though the team is currently doing fairly well and known for their entertaining football style they have been low on cash and struggling to meet salaries and accommodation costs for players since gate takings and grants from the Botswana Premier League are not enough to sustain the club.
Notwane currently occupy position 12 in the log standings with six games to spare.
Getbucks Botswana has also pledged to deliver a fully new branded playing kit to the club on April 13.
On behalf of Notwane Club, its president Mothusi Lekalake thanked the company for extending a helping hand to their football wing and emphasized the importance of institutional sponsorships as well as educating branches on the value of sponsorship.
