The Zebras will look to redeem their pride in the 2020 Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) where they will face Seychelles on the preliminary stages.

Zebras failed to qualify for the expanded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) billed for Egypt this July. From six games it played in AFCON 2019 qualifiers, the team managed only a draw to emerge at the tail-end of their group.

Their only hope now for redemption lies on the CHAN tournament. Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote’s side will face Seychelles on April 19th with the second leg slated for the 10th of May in Seychelles.

The Zebras are yet to qualify for the tournament finals which is a continental showpiece reserved only for the home-based players. .

Some 47 teams are vying for the 15 places to join hosts Ethiopia who qualified automatically as hosts.

Despite putting up an impressive performance against Angola in their last Group I AFCON game, the Zebras still failed to convert clear chances against the shaky Angolan defence.

However, local football pundits say the team promises to be a force to reckon with based on their recent performance. 

Analyst Jimmy George said the Zebras should not underestimate Seychelles and work hard to qualify for the championships in order to redeem the national pride.

George said believes the interim coach Mogomotsi Mpote should be given chance in building the team as well as applying his tactics, noting that since most of the players are doing well in the current league campaign they will give the mentor some serious headaches with regards to selection.

He is being assisted by another experienced local coach Rapelang Razor Tsatsilebe who previously coached Sharps Shooting Stars.

Mpote, who was appointed on interim basis following dismissal of David Bright in February, is expected to unveil the team that will face Seychelles next week.

Senior women team

Meanwhile, the senior women national team has advanced to the next stage of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Qualifiers following 3-2 aggregate win over Namibia.

The women team won 1-0 in the first round tie played in Gaborone before playing 2-2 away on Tuesday. The team will next face Banyana Banyana of South Africa on a date yet to be confirmed.
