Some want him for Zebras job

Botswana Football Association (BFA) is busy searching for a new coach who will take over the reins of the national team – the Zebras – on a permanent basis.

However the current interim coach Mogomotsi Mpote’s heroics are hard to ignore. Since he   appointed in March, Mpote has performed well. He succeeded Major David Bright who was sacked after a poor showing during the 2019 AFCON qualifiers.

Though Mpote went on to lose his first game in charge 0-1 to Angola his charges were praised for displaying good football. They never looked back and have continued with every game to impress.  The latest accolade came from the team making the finals of the regional COSAFA tournament where they defeated South Africa and Lesotho before losing out to Zambia in the finals.

This performance has given BFA second thoughts about whether to elevate him to permanent coach or not.

Back in March, BFA put out an advertisement for a coach with a CAF or UEFA Pro License with an experience in African and European football. With no coach with such qualification and experience locally, the profile fitted former Zebras gaffers Jelusic Veselin and Peter Butler though Nikola Kavazovic is reported to be in pole position to land the job.

Now Mpote’s success both at his club Orapa United and the national team has absolutely shaken those in power at BFA. He has recently won the Orange FA Cup convincingly, a development that has significantly enhanced his CV.

His modern attacking type of football style has fascinated many locally. As it stands “Teenage” as he is known, has led the Zebras to the second round qualifiers of CHAN where he will play Zambia after knocking out islanders Seychelles.

Since BFA is on a search for a coach, the main question is – are they going to let Mpote continue with his project more especially at CHAN or will they distort it by bringing a new gaffer as soon as possible?

According to sources close to the developments, the BFA is contemplating giving Mpote the assistant coach role once the new head coach is hired or the national Under 23 coaching role. However, the U23 job will be a familiar role as he once led the team.

“He was given the post on temporary basis because BFA was going under some restructuring in its technical departments. But he has proven himself over a short period of time. He has experience because he was with the U23 previously but at this point in time he is willing to continue because he has built a formidable team which has a future and is capable of doing the 2012 heroics of Stanley Tshosane’s team. So he might be retained once a new coach is hired either as an assistant or at the U23s,”said a source.

BFA Chief Executive Officer Mfolo Mfolo has denied the allegations.

“No, it is not true because right now the recruitment process for new coach is still on-going and we are duly following it. Of course we are happy with Mpote’s performance thus far but remember he came at time in which we were still in search of a new mentor for our team,” he said.
